| Directions to Gimbels:
Easy Way: ride to Grand Central, take metro north (recommend 8:23am train)
to Hartsdale Station, take Hartsdale Ave. (right turn out of depot) to Central
Ave., turn left (south), and ride slow until you see the group coming the other
way.
Less Easy Way: Follow directions to GWB and continue straight under bridge.
Right turn on 181st, left on Broadway. Follow Broadway into the Bronx (suggest
using sidewalk over Broadway Bridge - steel grid deck), and turn right on 238th
St., cross over Deegan Expwy. Bear straight uphill (Orloff Ave.?), bear left
across Van Cortlandt Ave., next right onto Van Cortlandt Park So./Gun Hill Rd.
Turn left on Jerome Ave., under elevated subway. Turn right on E. 233rd St.,
next left on Van Cortlandt Park East. Becomes Kimball Ave. Continue to Cross
County Shopping Center (entrance is on your left, just before the Cross County
Parkway. Ride starts near Stern's dept. store, about 9:15am, Saturdays and
Sundays. Approximately 25mi from Brooklyn Bridge.
You can shorten the ride by taking the 4 train to the end (Woodlawn), and pick
up the route on Jerome Ave. You can also try taking the 2 train to the end
(Wakefield/241st), and ride west on 241st/Wakefield Ave. to Kimball Ave.,
although I've never done this. I suggest bringing along Hagstrom's Lower
Westchester County map.
Both the long and short versions of the ride end on Boston Post Rd. in
Mamaroneck.
Driving to Gimbels: FDR to Willis Ave. Bridge to Deegan Expwy. Exit for Cross
County Shopping Center. From West Side Highway, take Cross Bronx Expwy to
Deegan.
Prospect Park:
The ride starts at 6am sharp at the 3rd street entrance year round. Usually you
will find a few kissena members in attendance. Pace starts off slow and builds
up speed through out the hour. You won't get dropped by this group. Its a
good ride for cyclist new to the sport that need to get comfortable riding in a
group.
George Washington Bridge:
Center Street north to Layfayette Street. Continue North on Park. Ave. until
23rd Street. Make a left and then a right onto Madision Avenue. Madision Ave
to 60th Street. Make a left. Proceed into Central Park.
Ride around the loop and out of the Park at the base of the 110th Street Hill.
Exit the Park onto Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. Proceed North on ACP to 117th
Street and bear left (not turn left) onto St. Nicholas Avenue.
Continue on St. Nicks until 166th Street and make a left. Make a right onto Ft.
Washington Avenue (166th ends at it). Continue North until 177th Street (Signs
say make left to GWB). Second right (don't know street name). Then you're at
the entrance to the GWB. Ride across.
There are other routes that go up the west side.

From the Brooklyn bridge you can take Chambers to West street. You can get
on the bike path just shortly north of Chambers street. Shortly below 96th
street there is a detour up to the "dual carriage lane," at which point you can
head back down to the bike path, or head up to Riverside. At 122nd street you
have another choice. If you stay on the bike path, at 122nd you can follow the
green signs, under the overpass and through a parking garage, to stay on the
bike path all the way up to the GW. Or at 122nd you can head south and up
the steep hill to Riverside Church for Riverside Drive. If you stay on the bike
path, continue until you go under the GW bridge, When you come up the hill,
make a left and there is one set of stairs for an overpass. ontinue up the hill
till you get to the bridge. |
